The article’s main focus is on the change in curriculum in Harvard University in 30 years. It mentions that this curriculum change would be “putting new emphasis on sensitive religious and cultural issues, the sciences and overcoming US parochialism”. Parochialism is when one is concerned with only a narrow range of issues, particularly those that concern one. The reason for this curriculum change is because there had been criticism about the curriculum in what was considered the “oldest US institute of higher learning”.

I think that this change would be beneficial for all in various ways, and it would also expose the students to many different customs, traditions, culture and habits that they have not known before. Besides, Harvard is a prestigious college, and it should not just focus too narrowly on academic topics or issues that concern US. Instead, there should be education on the various different parts of the world, as well as real life issues, for example, ethical issues in science as mentioned in the article.

This article mentions US parochialism more than once. I think that parochialism belonging to any form is not beneficial, as this will only narrow a person’s view of the world, and also limits the so-called knowledge for the person to learn. Education can begin from issues directly concerned with the person, and then slowly branch out to include bigger, broader issues. It should not be stagnated at a point where the learning only comes from the issues directly concerned.

Education should not just be about the facts of life and in science and languages, it should be able life itself, and how knowledge can be applied to life. There are many different things about education such as culture and beliefs that are worth learning and looking into. Every different culture and belief is a new window of knowledge, and enriches one’s learning experience as well as provides one with more information about others instead of just issues and things that are directly concerned with oneself. This provides a broader perspective for one to look into, and there’s more room for exploration too.

Only when knowledge not only about oneself, but also about others is grasped, can that be considered as truly learning. Education should aim to achieve this level, whereby there is no parochialism. By changing the curriculum, Harvard is in fact leading by example to other colleges, and I think that this change would be for the betterment of education.

This article reflects how outer appearance matters a lot to teenagers nowadays, and how it can affect their confidence and self esteem as well. It shows results that reflect the close relationship between body satisfaction and self esteem, particularly for girls.

Although this study is based in New York, it is evident that such instances exist in Singapore as well. Teenagers are mostly influenced by the images portrayed in the media. People featured on television and in magazines are more often than not an example of what is considered the “perfect” body now. For females, they are mostly shown skinny, sometimes to the extent of looking malnourished and for males; they are mostly shown with the so-called “good body” with six packs. These images can subconsciously set a standard in the teenagers’ minds for them to achieve.

Not too long ago, there were cases of secondary school girls competing to lose weight, and these girls ended up getting anorexia nervosa, some even had to be hospitalized. Not only in Singapore, there was a case in Spain where a 14 year old girl starved to death due to anorexia nervosa as she was trying to lose weight in order to attain her dream of being a model.

Things like bullying also occur due to self-esteem, and this further causes the victim to feel bad about her self-image. Not only does this happen to girls, it happens to boys as well. Every now and then, there are bullying cases happening.

The main reason that is indirectly causing teenagers to have low self-esteem is the influence from the media. This has escalated to many negative consequences and should not be encouraged. The media is feeding the wrong ideas into the teenagers’ minds, though it is not justified to say that all media is doing that, as there are times when issues like body image are addressed.

One thing that can be seen from the article is that Singapore is greatly influenced by the Western countries, as they are perceived to be more advanced and at a higher level than us Asians. The article mentioned that the blacks are less inclined to suffer from low self-esteem due to body satisfaction, and this shows how Western culture has come to influence Asian countries like Singapore, particularly the young generation.

It is not beneficial for teenagers to blindly follow Western culture, especially if it can be harmful to us. Teenagers should, instead, learn from the blacks and how they do not let their body satisfaction affect their self-esteem.

1. Bayley won the house carnival for rugby after several disputes along the way

3. A lot of PTs and assignments due this week and the next, wtf man, last two weeks of school term they still want to push us, diaos =/

6. i still suck at rugby, got to work a lot harder

7. i took this damn amazing SBS bus last friday, it was super cool with sofas and all, photos coming up soon =)
